Since 1999 we’ve operated motorcycle tours in the U.S. under the name of California Sunriders. Quite the journey it’s been… Countless memories on countless miles of scenic roads have been made. Big cities and small towns were hosting us for decades.
You could wholeheartedly say that we’ve been around the block when it comes to tours, routes. sights and stops, making dreams come true for all those two-wheel aficionados, and even some of them on four wheels.

Motorcycle Travellers Have Adjusted
In the past decade, motorcycle travelers' preferences have shifted. While there were guided and self-guided tours riders could participate in, many now prefer to mount a GPS on their handlebars and set off independently or in small groups, rather than join costly organized tours.
Hotel booking engines on the web have become more sophisticated and easy to navigate and accommodation deals can be found at every online corner.
Guided Tours - A Thing Of The Past?
Don’t get us wrong, there are good reasons to participate in a guided tour. One of the greatest advantages being on a guided tour is that it’s usually conducted with a support vehicle. A helpful and convenient amenity, but one you pay for dearly. Because, support truck, driver, driver hotel, tour guide, tour guide hotel, tour guide bike all cost a good amount of money.
You’re taking part in a guided tour to ride with a bunch of likeminded people? Think about it: even that awesome group that seemed to be so cool during the welcome dinner can turn into a crowd of jerks that you now have to spend the next 8 or 14 days with. We’ve been there… The dynamic of a group can change unexpectedly, sometimes diminishing the tour experience.
A motorcycle & hotel package (AKA self guided tour) can be much more liberating. But think again: has your tour company really booked the most suitable hotel for you? Are they even asking you what hotel category you’d prefer or are they accommodating you in sketchy “standard/tourist class”hotels (and they won’t tell you which ones until you book…)?
