The Sandhills Curiosity Shop - A Unique Emblem of Route 66
Nestled in the quiet town of Erick, Oklahoma, the Sandhills Curiosity Shop stands as one of the most intriguing and eccentric spots along the historic Route 66. Over the years, it has become a must-visit location for travelers and a testament to the spirited individuals who have contributed to the Mother Road's enduring legacy. At the heart of this unique establishment were its equally unique owners: Harley and Annabelle Russell, also endearingly known as the "Mediocre Music Makers." For years and years the two have welcomed our Route 66 tour groups dressed in red and white striped overalls, waving huge American flags and shouting their incorruptable “Yee Haw!!”.
Harley and Annabelle - The Heart and Soul of the Shop
Harley and Annabelle Russell weren’t just any ordinary store owners. They’re characters, in every sense of the word. From their vivacious personalities to their spontaneous musical performances, this delightful couple had been the lifeblood of the Sandhills Curiosity Shop. They embraced their visitors with warm, open arms, often offering a tune or two played on old instruments, making every visit a memorable experience. Their chemistry and genuine love for what they did made them a living testament to the spirit of Route 66.
The Russells' commitment to preserving the spirit of Route 66 and their own brand of eccentric entertainment led them to earn the moniker "The Mediocre Music Makers." They reveled in this title, showcasing their quirky sense of humor and lack of pretentiousness. While they might refer to themselves as "mediocre," their music was a heartfelt, authentic representation of the soul of Route 66 and American folk traditions.
Harley's Exceptional Musical Prowess
Beneath the playful antics and jovial tunes played in the shop, there's a depth to Harley's musical talent that truly sets him apart. It might come as a surprise to some visitors, given the fun and carefree atmosphere of their performances, but Harley is an exceptionally skilled guitar player.
His prowess with the strings is something that many have described as transcendent. From soulful blues riffs to intricate finger-picking melodies, Harley's guitar playing can evoke deep emotions and transport listeners to another place and time. His mastery over the instrument speaks volumes of his dedication to the craft, a passion likely nurtured over many years and countless hours of practice.
While the Sandhills Curiosity Shop offers a lighthearted and quirky ambiance, those who truly listen will recognize and appreciate the profound musical talent that Harley possesses.
The Route 66 Hall of Fame Induction
Their dedication to the Route 66 community and the joy they brought to every traveler did not go unnoticed. In acknowledgment of their outstanding contributions to the legacy and spirit of Route 66, Harley and Annabelle were inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame. This honor celebrated their relentless passion and commitment to keeping the history and essence of the road alive.
Being inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame is no small feat. It is a recognition reserved for individuals, businesses, and attractions that have made significant and lasting impacts on the heritage of the historic highway. For Harley and Annabelle, it's not just about running a shop; it's about embodying the spirit, history, and culture of Route 66 and sharing it with every visitor who walks through their doors.
Inside the Sandhills Curiosity Shop
Stepping inside the Sandhills Curiosity Shop is like taking a step back in time and entering a world of wonders. The shop, housed in Erick's oldest building, which was formerly the City Meat Market, is filled wall-to-wall with Route 66 memorabilia, antiques, and oddities. Every nook and cranny has a story, and every artifact showcases a slice of Americana. And then there are guitars, lots of guitars, spread out across the shop, some of them invaluable collectors pieces.
But more than the items, it's the atmosphere of the place that captivates. With Harley and Annabelle often bursting into song or sharing a tale or two, it became clear that the Sandhills Curiosity Shop is not just a shop - it's an experience. It's a living, breathing entity that embodies the passion, quirkiness, and soul of Route 66.
In Memory of Annabelle
Life has its rhythms of joys and sorrows. In 2014, the town of Erick and the Route 66 community felt a profound loss with the passing of Annabelle. Her vivacious spirit, warm laughter, and boundless energy had been a beacon of light to all who entered the shop. While her absence is deeply felt, Harley has continued to operate the shop with a resilient spirit. His efforts are not only to keep the shop alive but to honor Annabelle's memory and the shared dream they nurtured together. Every tune he plays, every story he tells, echoes with the love and memories of the times when they both charmed visitors from all corners of the world.
The Sandhills Curiosity Shop is more than just a pit stop on a journey along Route 66; it's a destination in and of itself. It represents the essence of what Route 66 stands for - a blend of history, culture, eccentricity, and the indomitable spirit of the individuals who have called the road home. Through their songs, stories, and spirited personalities, Harley, and the memory of Annabelle, remind us of the magic that lies in the open road and the adventures that await in the most unexpected places.
