Neverland Gates
Any Michael Jackson fans here? Figueroa Mountain Rd starts just across Hwy 154, opposite from the center street in Los Olivos, Grand Ave. If you follow this road for some 5.2 scenic miles, you’ll get to the gates of Neverland; this was Michael’s estate where he had a zoo, an amusement park, a train station and his mansion.
For all the years dating back to his death in 2009, there was unfortunately not much else to see but the gates, as the buildings are located about 1.5 miles behind the gates, tucked away in the lush vegetation of his property. In 2020 however, the billionaire Ron Burkle purchased the land for $22 million and started restoring the place back to its former glory, bringing it back to life including the petting zoo. There will be plenty of movie shoots going on for the 2025 release of a Michael Jackson biopic.
Sadly, Neverland Ranch is not going to be open to the general public, at least not yet. Here’s an excerpt of the official Michael Jackson website:
“Neverland unfortunately cannot be open for public visitation. We wish it could. Its location and the applicable zoning regulations prohibit opening it up to the public. During his lifetime, Michael explored this possibility and was faced with the fact that it could not be done.”
San Marcos Rd
3.3 miles from where Stagecoach Rd connects back to Hwy 154 you’ll find North San Marcos Road, a hidden gem for motorcycle enthusiasts and scenic drivers alike. This picturesque route offers a thrilling combination of winding turns, stunning vistas, and a taste of California’s rugged natural beauty. If you’re already feeling the “flow” on Hwy 154 and you’re diggin’ it then don’t worry, just continue and the 154 will connect you directly with the 101. Hwy 154 is an equal stunning ride when it drops into Santa Barbara, just with wider turns and less technical.
The Ride
For motorcyclists, San Marcos Road is a dream come true. The road’s twists and turns provide an exhilarating ride, challenging your skills while rewarding you with breathtaking views. As you descend from the San Marcos Pass, the road opens up to panoramic vistas of the Santa Ynez Valley and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Each curve presents a new angle of the stunning landscape, making it impossible not to stop and take in the scenery.
Scenic Beauty
The road cuts through lush hillsides and offers glimpses of the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Oak trees and chaparral cover the landscape, and in the spring, wildflowers add bursts of color to the scene. The higher elevations of the pass provide sweeping views that extend all the way to the Channel Islands on a clear day, making it a perfect route for nature lovers and photographers.
Practical Tips
While the ride is thrilling, it’s important to stay cautious as the road can be narrow with sharp turns. Be sure to check your brakes and tires before embarking on this route, and always wear appropriate riding gear. The road is well-maintained, but its winding nature demands attention and respect.
