Monterey, CA - Pismo Beach, CA
“Big Sur - A Journey Along the Edge of the World.”
A word to begin with: Due to weather conditions and erosion, sections of Highway 1 crumbled into the ocean, and an 8.8 mile section of the California State Route 1, aka Highway 1, has been closed to traffic for a while now. This is very unfortunate as riders are going to miss one of the best parts of this entire tour.
However, there is an alternative and that’s why we recommend an additional day in the Monterey area.
Adding an extra day would enable you to travel south on Hwy 1 from Monterey to Limekiln State Park, approximately 2 miles north of Lucia. You’d get to see Big Sur and all the goodies PCH has to offer, then you’d return to Monterey, maybe with a side trip to Laguna Seca.
When you depart Monterey, you’d take the super scenic Carmel Valley Road all the way to Greenfield, ride a few miles south on 101 and exit Fort Hunter Liggett/Jolon Road. Follow Jolon Rd until it becomes Mission Rd, then turn left on Del Venturi Rd. which will turn into Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd. This road will bring you back to Highway 1 just south of Lucia making you miss only a short section of Highway 1.
If you can’t spare a day in Monterey for the Big Sur experience, you can use the same suggested routing south, but will unfortunately miss out on the most exhilarating ride of the California Central Coast.
CaltransHighway 1 is closed for 8.8 miles, from 2.1 mi north of Lucia to 16.8 mi south of Big Sur /at Dolan Point/ (Monterey Co) - Due to emergency repairs - Motorists are advised to use an alternate route. It is unknown at this point when this particular stretch of Highway 1 will reopen again, we recommend checking the road condition at the Caltrans website https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ |
Traveling Highway 1 through Big Sur on a motorcycle is an exhilarating adventure that offers unparalleled freedom and breathtaking scenery at every twist and turn. The iconic route, renowned for its dramatic coastal cliffs, lush redwood forests, and sweeping ocean vistas, provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable ride.
As you navigate the winding road, the thrill of leaning into each curve is matched only by the awe-inspiring beauty surrounding you, from the turquoise waters crashing against the rocks to the misty morning fog lifting off the mountains. Stops at landmarks like Bixby Creek Bridge, McWay Falls, and Nepenthe enrich the journey, allowing you to soak in the vistas and the vibrant local culture. Riding through Big Sur on a motorcycle is a sensory experience that captures the essence of California's rugged coast and the spirit of the open road.
We encourage you to make many stops along the way. We know the ride is oh so sweet, but please do stop if you feel the need to gaze. You don’t want to end up 60 ft down the cliffs…

Aubergine, a Michelin-starred restaurant, is a standout, offering a seasonal tasting menu that showcases the best of California's bounty.

La Bicyclette, a French-inspired bistro, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, known for its wood-fired pizzas and rustic, European ambiance. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon sampling a variety of wines, from robust reds to crisp whites, and learn about the winemaking process from knowledgeable staff.

One of the first things visitors notice about Carmel-by-the-Sea is its distinctive architecture. The town is famous for its whimsical fairytale cottages, many of which were designed by Hugh Comstock in the 1920s. These enchanting homes, with their steeply pitched roofs, rustic stone chimneys, and quaint gardens, make every stroll through Carmel feel like a walk through a fairytale.

This quirky tradition encourages visitors to explore and discover the town's hidden gems, guided by curiosity and a sense of adventure.
Festivals and Events
Carmel Bach Festival
Carmel-by-the-Sea hosts several annual festivals and events that draw visitors from around the world. The Carmel Bach Festival, held every July, is a highlight, celebrating the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and other classical composers. The festival features a series of concerts, lectures, and masterclasses, showcasing the talents of world-class musicians.
Carmel International Film Festival
Film enthusiasts will enjoy the Carmel International Film Festival, which takes place each fall. The festival screens a diverse selection of films, including documentaries, shorts, and feature-length movies, and provides a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work.
Talking about film : The legendary actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood served as the town's mayor from 1986 to 1988. Eastwood ran for office primarily to address concerns about restrictive building codes and other local ordinances that he felt were stifling development and creativity. His successful campaign brought significant attention to the small town, and during his tenure, he worked to improve city services and streamline the permit process. Eastwood's time as mayor is still a notable part of Carmel's unique history.
Trivia: "Is it true that it is prohibited to wear high heels in Carmel?"
Yes, it is true that high heels were once effectively "forbidden" in Carmel-by-the-Sea, but not in the way you might think.
The city has an unusual ordinance that requires a permit for wearing shoes with heels higher than two inches or with a base less than one square inch. This quirky law was enacted in the 1960s as a way to prevent lawsuits resulting from falls caused by the town's uneven pavement and cobblestone streets. Although the ordinance still exists, it is not strictly enforced, and obtaining a permit is a simple process. It's more of a charming oddity and a reflection of Carmel's unique character rather than a stringent rule.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Just south of Monterey, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is your first scenic stop. This stunning park offers dramatic ocean views, picturesque hiking trails, and abundant wildlife, including sea otters and seals. It’s worth a quick stop to stretch your legs and take in the natural beauty.
Bixby Creek Bridge
Next up is the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in California. As you ride over this engineering marvel, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views of the rugged coastline and the deep canyon below. There are several pullouts before and after the bridge where you can stop for a photo op.
If you stop at the one right before the bridge an step out to the edge of the parking area you can see a house below built into the cliffs. That's where you can visit us if we ever win the lottery...
